Measuring Green Learning and Action at the Implementation Level: GREEN Climate and Education Data and Measurement Roundtable Series

On April 8, 2025, Unbounded Associates hosted a virtual discussion on emerging practices and challenges around measurement and data collection for education and climate indicators at the program implementation level. The objective was to share emerging practices and challenges around measurement and data collection on relevant education and climate indicators at the program implementation level.

Speakers included representatives from the OECD, Room to Read, Take Action Global, I4DI .

I presented my paper (with Angrist, Winseck, Graff Zivin) published in the Review of Economics and Statistics, where I argued that education is a necessary but not sufficient action for climate resiliency. While addressing climate change requires individual behavior change and voter support for pro-climate policies, surprisingly little is known about how to achieve these outcomes. In our paper, we estimate causal effects of additional education on pro-climate outcomes using new compulsory schooling law data across 20 European countries. We analyze effects on pro-climate beliefs and behaviors, as well as novel data on policy preferences and voting for green parties. Results show that a year of education substantially increases pro-climate beliefs, behaviors, and policy preferences (https://doi.org/10.1162/rest_a_01444 or https://www.nber.org/papers/w31000).

I made the case for more and better education. My slides are here.
